Oh No! It's Snow!

It’s here! The dreaded snow has finally arrived, just as it always does. It is the time of year where I send constant reminders to everyone to drive safe, walk safe, and shovel safe! The chiropractic profession in Minnesota becomes very seasonal- we have a significant increase in injuries due to the bad weather. This is multi-faceted of course; with the ongoing cold causing more aches and pains, icy conditions causing falls and accidents, and shoveling heavy snow causing strains and sprains of everyone’s backs. Also, as mentioned in previous newsletters, our immune systems are being taxed, and a lot of our energy goes towards getting and staying healthy.

When shoveling, there are a few important rules to follow. The golden rule is simple: Don’t twist your spine! Lifting the heavy snow and throwing it off to the side or over your shoulder puts extreme strain on the discs in your back, and you may be one twist away from injuring yourself. The rule of thumb is to do everything in front of you, so when shoveling snow, turn your feet to throw it in front of you instead of keeping your feet planted and throwing it to the side. The second rule is easy too: take breaks! Lifting heavy snow is a great cardiovascular workout, so breaks are mandatory. You may notice that it becomes difficult to catch your breath, or your heart starts beating fast when shoveling, especially if you haven’t exerted yourself that much in a while. Taking a 5-minute break every now and then will do wonders to save you from possibly very negative health consequences. Always lift with your legs and not your back, don’t twist your back, and take breaks and snow shoveling will be pain free!

Driving in the winter is another story- there’s nothing easy about it. The icy conditions, poor visibility, and other bad drivers can negate your good driving habits quickly. Be as cautious as you can be, but if you have the misfortune of being in an accident- we are here to help. Minnesota is a no-fault state, meaning no matter who caused an accident, your own auto insurance will cover your medical costs, including chiropractic care. This means that with any fender bender, no matter how minor or major, you will have your care paid for. We submit the claim on your behalf, and there is no hassle to get the coverage you are entitled to (unlike medical insurance). Let us know if you have questions or concerns regarding auto accident, your coverage, and your care in our office.

As careful as you are, bad things can still happen. If you are feeling sore or hurt yourself while shoveling or playing in the snow, we can help! And if you are involved in an accident, tell us right away before you get treated; there is a proper protocol to go through prior to treatment to ensure you get the coverage you are entitled to as well as safe and effective care. As always, if you know anyone who can benefit from our care at OHZ, let them know! We are happy to help!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Yours in Health, Dr. J.
